Island Certification and Licensing Requirements
For Certified School Nurse-Teachers
To become licensed
as a Certified School Nurse-Teacher under Rhode Island law, you must
first be a licensed Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university. In addition, you must be licensed to
practice nursing in the state of RI and have a minimum of three years
documented work experience as an R.N. The School Nurse-Teacher
certification entitles you to work within the Rhode Island public
school system administering the state mandated programs and it is also
a certification to teach Health Education in grades K through 12.
The certification
process requires additional academic coursework in areas of education

Rhode Island
College offers a graduate level course in school nursing during the
spring semester: HED 531 Methods and
Procedures for School Nurse Teachers:
In this course, students examine the scope, principles, and practices
required of certified school nurse teachers in an educational setting.
This course meets state certification requirements for school nurse
teachers.
3 credit hours.
Prerequisite: registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree.
