Rhode Island Certification and Licensing Requirements
For Certified School Nurse-Teachers

To become licensed as a Certified School Nurse-Teacher under Rhode Island law, you must first be a licensed Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. In addition, you must be licensed to practice nursing in the state of RI and have a minimum of three years documented work experience as an R.N. The School Nurse-Teacher certification entitles you to work within the Rhode Island public school system administering the state mandated programs and it is also a certification to teach Health Education in grades K through 12.

The certification process requires additional academic coursework in areas of education and health education. To learn more about the specific course requirements, visit the RI Department of Education and click here to download their current requirements..

Rhode Island College offers a graduate level course in school nursing during the spring semester:  HED 531 Methods and Procedures for School Nurse Teachers:   In this course, students examine the scope, principles, and practices required of certified school nurse teachers in an educational setting. This course meets state certification requirements for school nurse teachers.

3 credit hours. Prerequisite: registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree.
